Living in the Pacific Northwest gives us the pleasure of easy accessibility to the freshest meat and produce. So imagine how thrilled I was when co-founder and CEO Janelle Maiocco of Farmstr reached out to me to share her new, online marketplace. Farmstr provides a simple, direct sales channel where farmers, ranchers, and fishers can post offers and consumers can easily find, access them, and buy organic quality, local sustainable food.
Buying direct means consumers pay less than they would at the store, gain increased control over food safety and quality, and a means to know the people, practices and standards behind their food.
Raised on her family’s farm Bellingham, Janelle is no stranger to tractors, muddy barn boots and hard work. This mother of of two has been a trained chef, food blogger and food marketer. Her newest venture: to help connect local growers without the middleman.
So how does Farmstr work? Local producers post a variety of offers, consumers find and purchase them and a pickup time is arranged…it’s a Craigslist for healthier eating!
Since their September launch, Farmstr already has has 50 farmers posting their available organic quality produce, seafood and livestock. These farmers deliver to a host of drop sites around the PNW from Bellingham to Burien, West Seattle to Redmond and Issaquah to more than 400 customers. Janelle is working to take her growing business south to Portland by late 2014.
To help celebrate Farmstr’s launch, Janelle is graciously offering one of our readers a $50 credit to Farmstr. Please note that this giveaway is only open to local Pacific Northwest residents with accessibility to a drop site in their area.
