Seattle Indoor Play: The Water Playground at Mountlake Terrace Pool

Even in the dead of winter, it can be fun to splash around in a pool. It’s a playful, easy way to liven up a weekend morning. With that in mind, I packed up my family to go check out the leisure pool at the Mountlake Terrace Recreation Pavilion, because it looked beautiful and sounded like a particularly great place for kids.

We went on a Saturday, and the pool was busy, mostly with parents and children attending swim lessons. It wasn’t too crazy though. Especially once we got in the pool, as there were much fewer leisure swimmers.

I loved the skylight covering the ceiling of the pool room and the large windows along one wall. It didn’t have that clammy feeling that indoor pools can have. Another perk: the especially warm water–a real plus when you are with young children

The pool is in a spacious area which includes a regular hot tub and a specially-heated family hot tub. The deepest part is along the windows. This is the spot for lessons. In the middle is the lazy river, a meandering maze with a gentle current for swimming laps or drifting on floaty toys. Though the feature is available to recreational swimmers, we didn’t check it out on this trip.

The leisure pool kept us occupied for the whole visit. With its low water level and padded floor, even toddlers can walk easily around the play area (though you do need to keep children under four within arm’s reach). There are lots of spray features, toys and floating equipment to keep your little ones occupied.

This set-up is definitely best for the five and under crowd. Kids who are any older might get a bit restless. But for the younger ones? Pure bliss. Lots of splashing and giggles. It can be relaxing for parents as well, because you can recline in the water for a while and have a little less to worry about safety-wise than you would with a deeper pool.

I’m totally sold on the idea of going to a pool for a little winter weekend fun. I’ve got a tip on another fantastic indoor water playground, and I can’t wait to check it out. Of course, I’ll share the experience here in a future post!
