Free Summer Events at the Seattle Public Library

Summer is always a special time at the Seattle Public Library. In addition to regular storytelling hours and the summer reading program, there are loads of free programs to enjoy. From music and dance to puppets and critters, here are some of the great activities planned for the rest of July and August:

Musical Storytelling with Soundbridge

The Soundbridge Seattle Symphony Music Discovery Center will present an interactive program for little ones from ages 2-5. Come for dance, song and a chance to learn about different instruments.

All dates are at the Central Library

Thistle Puppet Theater: Goldilocks and the Three Bears

This musical presentation of the classic tale with a modern twist is from the 2011-12 Thistle Puppet Theater season.  It’s  a great way to sample what the group has to offer.  We went to this one, and the program was actually about 45 minutes. It was a lively and colorful show. Ages 3 and up.

Oregon Shadow Theater performs the action-packed tale of a hero of the American West. Ages 4 and up.

Circus 101

Artists from Teatro ZinZanni will teach your kids a few tricks of their trade, from juggling and slapstick to clowning. Best for ages 10-16.

This interactive program presented by Ocheami includes drums, storytelling, dance and instruction. Best for ages 5-12.

Little Critters

Education staff from the Woodland Park Zoo will present a program with puppet stories and the opportunity to touch real animals afterwards. Best for age 5 and under.

Funny Bamboo Music

An upbeat, humorous performance of traditional Vietnamese folk music by the Canadian duo Khac Chi.
