With Mother’s Day approaching, I have visions of a relaxing day of sunshine, handmade cards from my little ones, and a day to appreciate the little beauties that I love so much. I’m not sure it will turn out that way, but one can hope. These little beauties sometimes drive me to insanity. Nonetheless, I cannot imagine the world without them. From the moment I first saw those screaming, scrunched up faces in the delivery room, I was hooked. They are stuck with me.
Mother’s Day takes on a different meaning when you become a mother yourself. I remember growing up and creating little masterpieces for my own mom. Countless cards and pictures, flowers made of tissue paper, and shopping trips with dad to the mall to find the perfect present. I seem to recall that we even made her some pretty special breakfasts a few times, at least.
It is wonderful to feel like your family appreciates the work you do as a parent. The job is rewarding, but it is not easy. There are tough days and sacrifices, just as there are warm snuggles and “I love you’s”. Once you become a mom, you become one of the most important people in your children’s lives. They depend on you, they trust you, and they emulate you. Kind of overwhelming when you think about it. I didn’t even need to apply for this job! It requires no degree or letters of recommendation, yet people become parents everyday. Not a day goes by that I don’t worry that I’m somehow messing something up or ruining them.
Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate moms and it doesn’t require a hefty budget to make us feel special. Truly, a handmade card or a cute picture would make my day.
If we were to up the budget just a tad, I could dream of my perfect Mother’s Day wish list:
- relaxing at the beach near our house and laying in the sun with a picnic lunch
- Giada’s new book – Weeknights with Giada – tied up with a pretty bow
- New stainless steel pots and pans because mine are horrendous
- A shopping spree for clothes for ME (yes, now I’m totally getting carried away…)
At the end of the day, we all just want happy, healthy kids, right? And a happy Mother’s Day. And maybe a maid.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there! Hope your day is full of relaxation and fun surprises.
