For fun free and low-cost activities for your kids, check out the NW Folklife Festival on Memorial Day weekend at Seattle Center. There will be lots of interesting opportunities for family friendly fun throughout the event, which runs from Friday to Monday, May 25-28. The fairgrounds will open at 11 AM, and events will run into the evening.
Learning about Instruments
The Dusty Strings Music School Tent on the Fisher Green will be hosting an instrument petting zoo. This is an opportunity for kids to get experience handling a wide variety of musical instruments, from guitars and banjos to the autoharp and hammered dulcimer.
Family Activities Tent
On the Next Fifty Plaza, there will be several free and low-cost activities available for kids, hosted by an array of local organizations. The Center for Wooden Boats will have materials available for making wooden toy boats; the Fremont Arts Council will give kids the opportunity to make a 100 foot “dragon float” out of plastic bottles and the Seafair organization will be on hand to demonstrate how to make a boat out of milk cartons for the Denny’s Seafair Milk Carton Derby. For a $3 materials fee, kids can also make their own Pop-Up Puppet.
Feeling the Beat
Though not geared specifically for kids, the Rhythm Tent on the North Fountain lawn has lots of great opportunities for family fun. There will be workshops, demonstrations, open jams and all sorts of different percussion instruments.
Local Kindie Rock
The main musical event for kids will be the Kindiependent show on Monday, May 28, from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM at the Fountain Lawn Stage. There’s going to be a great line-up of some of the most popular local kiddie bands. Check out this amazing schedule:
